essay for ms. valaerie 3-25-08

If I were to run for President in the 1860’s before the abolishment of slavery what would be the four most important issues that I would focus on?

Many people may consider different things to be considered rather important to them. Slavery is defiantly of importance to me. I feel as though the president has control over what ever happens in his country so he could have quickly put a stop to it that is, if he wanted to. If I were to have ran for president back in the 1860’s before the abolishment of slavery I would have focused on these four main topics:

Rights
Racial discrimination
Freedom
New laws

I would most defiantly focus on rights for one because even though it was not established then I would have made it known that it was not eight to hold people and work them against their will. Like they always say if you want something done right, some times you just have to do it yourself. Maybe it’s the fact that most slave owners were just too lazy to do it for them selves. Or maybe it was the fact that they enjoyed to see African Americans doing hard labor getting whipped wit no pay or even a thank you. What ever the reason maybe, it was unfair.

I would deeply focus on racial discrimination. All the slaves that were owned were all black. Why did you never see a white slave? Well because their never was one. Why did the average African man only equal to 3/5 of a European? Because, they simply did not believe that fact that an African American was worth a whole human being.

I would also focus on freedom. You truly have nothing at all if you don’t have your freedom. Pride is one thing, self respect is another but if you don’t have your freedom, you can not do anything. Having total and complete ownership of another person is so wrong in so many ways. If you did not mother or father that person then they do not belong to you. Imagine if some stranger had total control of your life, terrible right?

Last but not least I would focus on new laws. One of the reasons none of the earlier presidents abolished slavery is because they did not care. In fact I believe that the only reason Africans were not allowed to vote is because the out numbered the slave owners and if they found some one that was on there side for presidency then their plan for world domination would have been ruined. So by keeping slaves of the polls it keep anybody for slavery in office.
